How to Overcome Fear and Embrace Failure

Silhouette of a woman standing victorious on the summit of a mountain.

Ever find yourself thinking of all the things you could do? Too afraid of failure?

Do you have hopes and dreams of what you might do in the future?

What you might achieve if only you did something about it?

One Day I will…

  • follow my passion
  • learn a language
  • get my finances in order
  • pay off all my debt
  • have an emergency fund
  • let people know what I really think

All One day…

This mythical day where you will be brave and do the things that you truly want to do.

That day may never come.

It won’t ever come if you continue to live in fear.

It will never come if you continue to do the same things day after day without a plan of action.

Fear drives your choices. Fear, stops you from exploring and learning and stretching yourself. To really find the true you.

You are your own worst enemy! Paralysed through the fear.

What Are we Afraid of?

That someone we know wont like us, or that someone we have never even met judges us.

Not everyone has to like you.

Not everyone has to want to be your friend.

If someone you have never met is mean to you, or about you or trashes your work, put it to the back of your mind. Forget about it.

Be your own cheerleader.

You are awesome and you are trying. It is all that we can do.

Try.

Just try to be the best version of yourself.

Understand that it is okay to fail.

It is essential to fail.

Without failure there is no growth.

Growth comes from learning. Learning what went wrong, and finding better ways, different ways, new ways of solving the problem.

Without failing time and time again, how would you know that you are pushing your limits. That you truly are being all that you can be.

How to Overcome Fear

Take these steps to help you overcome fear.

  1. Learn to trust yourself
    • Your opinion matters. You matter.
  2. Adopt a growth mindset.
    • If you plan to succeed in your endeavours then make a plan and stick to it. You can do this.
  3. Take ownership of your life
    • Understand that you are responsible for your own life. It is up to you to take the necessary action to get to where you want to be in life.
  4. Identify your fears and recognise that fear can work to your advantage.
    • If you are afraid of failing an exam, put the extra effort in to prepare so that you are set for success.
    • Worried about not having enough saved for a pension? Start saving. Find ways to invest in a pension so that when the time comes to retire you are prepared.
  5. Face your fears
    • Avoiding fear can only make it worse. Gradually expose yourself to your fear under a controlled environment so that you will not panic when you face it.
    • Think of scenarios and situations to prepare your mind to face the fear in real life.
  6. Practice mindfulness
    • Contemplate on how you have dealt with fear in the past. What action did you take? Did that action result in success? How could you have handled the situation better?
  7. Try, Try and Try again
    • Understand that failing at something does not make you a failure.
    • Not trying out of fear is a guaranteed way to fail.
    • Give it a go, monitor your progress and regularly assess how you can make improvements. Make the required adjustments to your plan.

Embrace Failure

Act. Do something. Be Bold.

Fail and fail, again and again, until you succeed and end up living your best life.

You never truly know what will happen “One Day,” until you make a start, and start to fail.
